Universal Packaging Machine (UPM)
Increase your pharmacy's accuracy and throughput with the Ursula Universal Packaging Machine (UPM). The UPM packs prescriptions and patient documents in shipping-ready bags.
Capable of handling bottles, vials and totes, the UPM optimizes your central-fill or mail-order pharmacy. The system includes:

Once the tote or bottles enter the UPM, it is scanned and matched to the patient order. Then the UPM prints, packs and seals your patient's prescription and documentation.
Training and Support
Built for pharmacies with both tote and bottle lines, Tension's Universal Packaging Machine (UPM) allows you to integrate pharmacy automation without having to reach a high-minimum requirement for each entry conveyor. Significantly faster than a typical packing clerk, the UPM provides accuracy and throughput to optimize your pharmacy. It easily interfaces with tote and bottle/vial lines, or puck-based conveyance systems to make integration simple and easy.
Pack Prescriptions Seamlessly
The UPM makes packaging prescriptions seamless. Totes, bottles and vials with individual patient prescriptions enter the system on conveyors. The UPM gathers order information from barcodes on the tote or bottle. It uses this information to track the order as it flows through the system.
Once the order information is gathered, a patient-specific literature packet is assigned, printed and assembled. The UPM contains four Kyocera printers to handle multiple print on-demand jobs. Tension’s Auto-Fold Technology crisply folds the literature packets before sending them on for verification.
Bags are then imprinted with patient mailing information. A 203 DPI thermal transfer imprinter provides high-quality printing on each polybag. The printer is able to print individual or variable information onto the mailer-bag directly or with a label.
Once the prescription, literature packet and bag are assembled, the UPM performs a three-point validation process. The system scans tracking barcodes on the bag, tote or bottle, and literature packet. Upon successful validation, all items are deposited into the pre-addressed bag. If any of the barcode scans do not match the order information, the system rejects the order for review by a technician. An Auto-Reject feature allows the system to continue operation and the technician to review exceptions without slowing production.
Once verification is complete and accuracy assured, the bag is sealed. Finished bags are routed onto a sort conveyor and discharged to specific bulk mail carrier bins.
